20CUSHING’S SYNDROME: A REVIEWCushing’s syndrome is an uncommon endocrine disorder characterized by prolonged and inappropriately elevated levels of circulating cortisol, and is associated with insufficiencies in the feedback mechanisms of the hypothalamopituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion. Cushing’s syndrome can affect patients of any age, but is more prevalent in females than males.
