The present study was undertaken to investigate diuretic effect of ethanol extract of Ochna obtusata leaves (EEOO) in normal rats. Ethanol extract of Ochna obtusata leaves was administered to experimental rats orally at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg p.o. Furosemide (20mg/kg, p.o) was used as positive control in study. The diuretic effect of the extracts was evaluated by measuring urine volume, sodium and potassium content, and ratio. Urine volume was significantly increased by the two doses of ethanol extract of Ochna obtusata leaves in comparison to control group. While the excretion of sodium and potassium excretion was increased by both doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg. The diuretic effect of the extracts was comparable to that of the reference standard (Furosemide). We can conclude that ethanol extract of Ochna obtusata leaves possess diuretic effect which appeared to be comparable to that produced by Furosemide. The present study provides a quantitative basis for explaining the folkloric use of Ochna obtusata leaves as a diuretic agent.
